Rare Calotype Of HMS Queen En Route To Crimean War 1854 By John Nicholas Laverty.

Extremely rare calotype/salt print showing part of the broadside of HMS Queen as seen fron the gun deck. The ship was at the time en route to the Crimean War. The photo was taken by John Nicholas Laverty who taught many early photographers including Thomas Sutton. Laverty was a Naval Instructor in the Royal Navy and served on the Queen from 1852 to 1855 and he died in 1857.

The photograph was a gift from the commander of the ship, W.J. Burnett to a friend, Thomas Innes.

Calotype / salt print mounted onto a large card mount with inscription by Burnett. 245X190mm

Very faded as is common with calotypes, but the detail is still very good. Evidence of retouching spots scattered over the image.
